Myanmar Irrawaddy Delta Dispatches - The Migration

Excerpts of reports from the Irrawaddy District that highlight the current situation in Myanmar (Burma)

Refugee Migration

“With the relief effort not up to speed, people are migrating,” said Horsey. The UN estimated that more than a quarter of a million people in the Irrawaddy Delta have been been forced to migrate in the aftermath of Nargis.

Not enough food in yet

“We think we need to be moving 375 tonnes of food a day down into the affected areas. We are doing less than 20 percent of that,” WFP spokesman Marcus Prior said in the Thai capital.
Water Access

“A doctor in Bogalay, in the heart of the affected region, said many victims

were drinking unpurified water from lakes and other places, with many freshwater sources littered with decaying human bodies and animal carcasses.”

Orphans - As seen from - Metta Development (Excerpts from May 12 Report)

We are learning that there are many orphans and children under 5 in the Myaugmya, Laputta and Pathein relief camps. Before Nargis, Metta had 15 Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) centers, but we have been able to find only one ECCD teacher among the survivors so far. We do however hope to identify more people with skills to support and care for these orphans and children.

Today ships with starving and sick survivors from remote areas have arrived in Pathein and Myaungmya about 4 times so far (yesterday 5 times). Metta provides fried rice, fried noodles and biscuits as they arrive. Local authorities, churches, communities, and relief camp personnel are all working together to take care of these people. Moreover, in Pathein, the team will distribute instant noodles, footwear, men and women’s underwear and shirts, tooth paste, tooth brushes and towels.
